Why do people call us a Democracy?

When you say democracy, generally people would ume you mean a "pure" or direct democracy where every issue is decided by a direct vote of the people. Also in a pure democracy, there is no supreme court that can override the will of the people. That is why it is more correct to say we are a constitutional republic, which is a very special kind of democracy.
