Question about renting apartment from out of state?

Im doing an exchange program through school and am going to be renting in a new city. Visited before though. Because I do not have a job lined up the apartment complexes have been asking to see a bank statement verifying enough money for at least double the rent of the lease term. I have all that but im weary of sending a statement. i dont want to give complete strangers my account number. they already have my name and social and the last thing i need is a disaster. i have already paid half first months rent and the apartment is on hold. is there some other way to verify my income with them?
