On the Sabbath day, what do Jewish people eat and why?

Since we can not cook from Friday sundown to Saturday sundown = Shabbat, we tend to eat foods that can be kept warm, such as soups, stews, etc.Cholent a type of slow cooked stew is very popular and there are hundreds of variations, so it is never boring.
